Yesterday I posted how to save money and calories by shopping after dinner.
Now, we’re moving on to shopping as smart and healthy consumers.
First, refrain from shopping the inside aisles until after you have shopped the entire perimeter of the store. The perimeter has most of the nutritious and living foods that are best for everyone: produce, meat/poultry, and dairy.
The center aisles have foods that have preservatives, additives, and chemicals that preserve the shelf life of the products. (Some items could last for years! Makes you wonder how safe they are!)
The grocer profits from stocking his store in this manner, as the grocer has to pay for the losses they suffer from throwing out all the perishable/expired foods people don’t buy.
Instead, shop the perimeter of the store, circling around before going to the center of the store and its aisles.
Choose only produce in season for your geographic region.
The past few years since Wal-Mart changed its buying process and became an import store, we’ve been getting foods out of season and out of our regions. Kroger later followed with a similar stocking process.
Buy produce grown in your region as the mineral content benefits your Endocrine system,(glands and organs of the body).
Produce from Chile or Mexico, where the soil may not be enriched; nor will the inspection constraints be equal to USA, is not a benefit for consumer health- it's just cheap.
A regular diet of foods from other countries just might be contributing to disease or vitamin/nutrient deficiencies that lead to disease.
Consider the efforts you’re making to eat produce for the quality of life, and then erase the benefits if the produce comes out of season from underdeveloped countries because it’s purchased not for value, but on the cheap, and the “savings” are passed on to the consumer.
Are the grocers serving consumers well in this way?
One more thing.
Be aware of the expiration dates on meats and poultry- buy expiration dates that extend you the most time.
Refrain from making purchases of discounted meats/poultry because the expiration dates are today or tomorrow. Likely, expiring meat/poultry will have more “legal” dyes and sulfites to preserve them just to get a sale-not so good for consumer’s health.
Get to know local farmers, they will have produce, poultry, meat, jams, honey, soaps, etc...to sell that meets USA standards, and you’ll have a safer food benefit going on for you and your family.
Let’s buy smarter, and teach the grocers that we want quality with savings, and we’ll accept nothing less!
